What is the Adhan?
The Adhan announces that the time for an obligatory prayer has begun and calls Muslims to worship. It is recited for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha.
Fajr wording
In the Sunni Fajr Adhan, the words As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm—prayer is better than sleep—are added. Wording and practice have recognised differences among Muslim traditions.
When you hear the Adhan
Listen respectfully, repeat the words following the established guidance and prepare for Salah. Audio on this page is for listening and learning; follow your local mosque for the actual prayer time.
